The Napoleon Thermal Baths of Plombières-les-Bains

The Napoleon thermal baths in Plombières-les-Bains

Plombières-les-Bains owes its thermal reputation to a Roman discovery in the 2nd century, when a garrison accidentally discovered hot springs, guided by their dogs. Aware of the benefits of these waters, the Romans developed the first baths.

The true golden age of thermalism came in the 19th century with the rise of the railway, allowing Plombières to become a popular destination, notably thanks to the "Water Train" linking the town to Paris in less than six hours. Napoleon III, seduced by the town, modernized the infrastructure and had the prestigious Thermes Napoléon built, marking the peak of the spa town.

The waters of the resort are renowned for their effectiveness in treating digestive disorders, joint pain, Crohn's disease and fibromyalgia.

Practical information: The CALODAÉ wellness center and the treatments at Thermes Napoléon are closed until further notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, the Plombières-les-Bains thermal baths and the Calodaé wellness center are closed until further notice.

Plombières-les-Bains was already renowned in Roman times for its very hot, mineral-rich waters. The resort has survived through the centuries, but it remained relatively small and largely unmodernized until the 19th century.

During several visits, Napoleon III took a personal interest in the modernization of the city. In 1857, he ordered the construction of a vast, modern thermal spa to meet the growing influx of spa-goers.

The establishment quickly became known as "Thermes Napoléon". The name stuck because the Napoleonic construction profoundly transformed Plombières-les-Bains, reinforcing the reputation of the "city of a thousand balconies" as a major spa resort.

We invite you to consult our page dedicated to Plombières to learn more about the history of this small town with character.

Due to its closure, the Thermes Napoléon establishment is not accessible to the public. Therefore, all visits are impossible.

However, you can visit the city and learn more about the special connection between Napoleon and the city of a thousand balconies by renting an audio guide from the tourist office (€2).

While awaiting the reopening of the Plombières thermal baths, you can undergo your treatment at several nearby spa resorts. You can consider:

  • Luxeuil-les-Bains
  • Bains-les-Bains
  • Vittel
  • Contrexéville

All these renowned spa resorts are easily accessible from our destination.
