Clémence Beretta, in the footsteps of the international Vosges walker

Published on September 25 2022

Clémence Beretta is the leader of an intriguing and fascinating discipline made popular by Yohann Diniz: race walking. Always in contact with the ground, always with one leg outstretched, going as fast as possible without ever running, that's the whole promise of this discipline.

Walk, always walk. She does it over whole kilometers in all the cities of the world, even rising to 6th place at the European Championships last August, beating at the same time the French record for the distance which has stood for 22 years.

The native of Remiremont with an impressive track record, talks about her career and her best places to train in the heart of the Vosges countryside.

Walking and the Vosges, obvious for Clémence Beretta

"After my high school at André Malraux in Remiremont, I had the chance to go and train for 6 years at the France pole in Nancy, even if they were great years for me, I ended up going back to my Vosges roots in 2021. With my coach, we had just ended our collaboration and I decided to restructure myself in my lifelong club: the Athlé Vosges Pays de Remiremont, it was obvious.

My father is the President and he has always had a central role in my sports project, without ever really being my main coach, he acts as an assistant coach. Since I have been coached remotely, his role is even more important for me because he accompanies me on my training sessions. »

A high-level environment but on a family and Vosges scale

“For many it was incomprehensible to leave a high-performance structure with cutting-edge staff and infrastructure, but for me it made sense. I had this need to find a more family environment, something tailor-made, something from which I chose everything from A to Z, finally regaining power over my sports project. Freedom has always been my oxygen, I am an athlete who listens to myself a lot but precisely because I fell into an extreme through a burnout in 2017 – I was only 19 and it was violent.

When I came back to my Terres vosgiennes, in Saint-Nabord, I knew it was the best solution for me. All year round I travel a lot, over a sporting season, I can sometimes be in total 4 months outside my home so it was very important to have an anchor point in which I feel good. . »

His favorite places to get away and train

“My training is divided into several parts but I spend most of my time on the green lane. This is where I realize all my mileage in motion, my favorite side is the Remiremont-Cornimont axis, there is also a place that I find magical. From the old Nol station, the greenway becomes very wild as it runs along the forest and you even pass through large rocks, it's almost mystical. I never tire of it!

This then brings us to the Gorges de Crosery, one of my favorite places in the Vosges, a waterfall welcomes you with a small natural beach, what's incredible is that again it's on the edge of the greenway so very accessible to all types of audience.

Then when I'm not walking but I'm running, towards the Perrey stadium, from this place you can reach a flat path in the middle of the forest which runs along a water channel, it's magnificent and relaxing. Continuing this path again in the direction of Éloyes, you come to the stele of Noirgueux.

You will then discover a wide bank surrounded by nature and a monument to the dead (Stele of Noirgueux) which pays tribute to the Americans who came to liberate Remiremont during the Second World War. I could not explain it rationally but there is a serenity that emanates from this place, I love stopping there, we have a view and a proximity to the Moselle without any noise pollution. Regularly I see deer or hares.

Finally, when I have a track session to do, I go to the Béchamps stadium in Remiremont, a magnificent sports complex renovated in 2020, the brand new track is just waiting to be trodden on.
The Vosges ? A real playground! »
