A day of cycling on the Hautes-Vosges Greenway

Published on September 3 2022

We are on vacation with friends in the Vosges for a short week and we have heard of the Hautes Vosges Greenway. We decided to rent bikes to undertake the discovery of this cycle path for a day. We reserve electric hybrid bikes at the Tourist Office in Remiremont. Equipped with our helmets, bikes and maps, we set off to explore the section towards Cornimont.

The first pedal strokes

We leave the Tourist Office, we cross the city to get to the lake, the starting point of the greenway. At the roundabout at the end of rue du Lit d'eau, we take the exit for the greenway.

We begin our journey on a portion of about 3km between Remiremont and Dommartin-lès-Remiremont which will take us to a second roundabout which corresponds to the crossroads of the two valleys:

  • On the right, the Moselle valley towards Bussang.
  • On the left, the Moselotte valley towards Cornimont.

On the advice of the Tourist Office, we take the direction of Cornimont and this more shady section. Let's go for 21km one way!

The Moselotte Valley and the Crosery Gorges

The Moselotte valley begins at the Dommartin-lès-Remiremont exit. The sun is with us, it's very pleasant. We cross the fields, we see farms, cows. We really like this greenway.

As we go, we are making good progress thanks to the electric assistance. We arrive at Peccavillers and pass a geology museum, Terrae Genesis. Characters are created in recycled parts. As we move forward, we see new fields and a few factories but the walk still delights us as much.

We continue like this, at a good pace, crossing Nol, Vagney while admiring the Vosges mountains. From there, it starts to get hot but it is then that we arrive at the Gorges de Crosery! Very beautiful place, restful and shaded… So we decide to take a break there to drink a little and eat a little bit at the edge of the water.

When we leave, we find that a good part of this greenway is well shaded and cool thanks to the rocks that surround us during our progress towards Cornimont.

The arrival at Cornimont, the starting point for this greenway

The kilometers pass. After Thiéfosse, we pass Saulxures-sur-Moselotte, where we make a short detour to see the leisure center, then finally we arrive at Cornimont! The last kilometers were a bit longer. The elevation, although light but still on false flat, was beginning to be felt and the landscapes were a little more "industrial".

Arrived at the end of the greenway, we push a little on our legs to reach the center of the village, where we stop on the terrace to regain some strength! We are actually not very used to bike rides!

It's time to go back to Remiremont

The day progressing well, it's time for us to turn around! We get on our bikes again and onward!

The return to Remiremont is easier than the outward journey towards Cornimont. We feel that we are downhill. We then go faster but the landscapes are still as beautiful!

We stop one last time at one of the many picnic tables found along the way.

When we arrived at the lake of Remiremont, we are happy of this beautiful day spent and we promise to return soon to travel the other part of the greenway, in the direction of Bussang this time.

We bring the bikes back to the Tourist Office and are proud to have covered around fifty kilometres!
